Donald Trump says NFT project not launched for the money, but for art

Ex-President Donald Trump has received received criticism for a shameless money grab from his fans in relation to his NFT project.

Critics claim the NFT project is a cheap and lazy con on his followers as they appear to be a collection of Trump’s face photoshopped onto other existing NFT projects or even pasted onto Halloween costume ads, some with the watermark not even removed. The images were released one day after Trump teased his followers that he would be providing them with a “big announcement”. The images depict Trump as a superhero like figure, a cowboy, an astronaut amongst other characters.

Each image was released and sold for $99 US dollars netting the ex-president over $1 million in profit. The project did sell out and prices increased initially but since the opening day prices have dipped as interest has waned in the project. Last year the ex-President’s wife Melania also released her own NFT project and received similar criticism at that time.

Trump recently responded to the criticism stating “he loved the art” and that he “didn’t do it for the money”. In a recent interview on OAN, Trump stated “Well I knew nothing about them and then a group came and I loved the art. They showed me the art.

“You know, it’s sort of comic book art when you think of it, but they showed me the art and I said, gee, I always wanted to have a 30-inch waist.”

The NFT project comes right before the House Select Committee investigating the January 6th attack on the capital and associated attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results released its final report. The report found the ex-president to be the “central cause” of the storming of the capital and efforts to overturn the election on January 6th. Trump has denied any wrongdoing, however the committee has referred Trump for criminal prosecution to the Department of Justice. The referral from the House Committee is not legally binding.
